Introduction: Virtual World Physics Laws​

Chapter 5 brought your URDF robot model into Gazebo, creating your first virtual robotics laboratory. However, merely visualizing robots in simulated environments proves insufficient for meaningful development. For digital twins to provide genuine value, they must accurately replicate physical behavior of real-world counterparts. This demands deep understanding of physics simulation.

Physics simulation represents computational modeling of physical laws governing objects and their interactions—gravity, collisions, friction, and dynamics. In robotics, accurate physics engines enable prediction of robot movement, environmental interaction, and sensor perception, all without expensive, time-consuming physical prototypes.

Gazebo, like other advanced simulators, employs sophisticated physics engines calculating rigid body motion, detecting collisions, and applying forces. Correctly configuring these physics properties for robot models and world environments proves paramount for achieving high fidelity between simulation and reality. If simulated robots behave too differently from real ones, simulation insights might mislead, potentially causing errors when deploying software to physical hardware.

Core Concepts: Rigid Body Dynamics and Sensor Simulation​

Physics simulation's heart lies in rigid body dynamics concepts. Rigid bodies are objects that don't deform; their shape and size remain constant. In simulation, robots and environmental objects are typically modeled as collections of interconnected rigid bodies (links) joined by joints.

1. Rigid Body Dynamics​

Physics engines calculate rigid body motion based on fundamental Newtonian laws:

  • Mass: Matter amount in an object. Crucial for calculating gravitational forces and inertia. Defined in <inertial> tag of URDF/SDF <link>.
  • Center of Mass (CoM): Point where entire body mass can be considered concentrated. Position defined by <origin> tag within <inertial>.
  • Inertia: Measure of object's resistance to rotational motion changes. Represented by inertia tensor with six components (ixx, ixy, ixz, iyy, iyz, izz). Defined in <inertia> tag within <inertial>. Accurate inertia values vital for realistic rotational dynamics.
  • Joint Properties: Position, velocity, and effort (torque/force) limits define joint movement range and strength. friction and damping coefficients can be added to joints mimicking real-world mechanical properties. Defined in <limit> and <dynamics> tags within <joint>.
  • Contact and Friction: When rigid bodies collide, forces generate. Friction opposes surface motion. Gazebo allows defining various friction coefficients (static, dynamic) and restitution (bounciness) for materials. Often set in .sdf model files or global physics properties.

Tuning these parameters requires careful attention. Incorrect values lead to unrealistic robot behavior—floating, excessive slipping, or unstable movements.

2. Physics Engine Parameters​

Gazebo supports several physics engines (ODE, Bullet, Simbody, DART), with ODE (Open Dynamics Engine) as default. Each engine has strengths and weaknesses. You can configure global physics parameters in .world files:

  • max_step_size: Maximum simulation time step size. Smaller values increase accuracy but decrease performance. Typically 0.001 seconds (1 kHz update rate).
  • real_time_factor (RTF): Ratio of simulated time to real time. RTF of 1.0 means simulation runs at real-time speed. RTF > 1.0 means faster, < 1.0 means slower.
  • real_time_update_rate: Frequency at which physics engine attempts simulation updates. Usually 1 / max_step_size.
  • iterations: Number of iterations used by solver for each time step. More iterations increase accuracy, especially for contacts, but also computation time.

Balancing these parameters is key to achieving both accurate and performant simulations.

3. Sensor Simulation​

Realistic sensor data proves crucial for testing perception algorithms. Gazebo provides powerful tools simulating various sensor types:

  • Camera Sensors: Generate realistic RGB, depth, and infrared images. Configurable parameters include resolution, field of view (FoV), update rate, noise, distortion, and plugins (Gazebo ROS camera plugins publish images to ROS 2 topics).
  • LiDAR Sensors (Laser Range Finders): Simulate laser scans providing distance measurements to surrounding objects. Configurable parameters include range, angle, resolution, noise, and plugins (Gazebo ROS LiDAR plugins publish scan data to ROS 2 topics).
  • IMU Sensors (Inertial Measurement Units): Simulate linear acceleration and angular velocity. Configurable parameters include noise, update rate, and plugins (Gazebo ROS IMU plugins publish data to ROS 2 topics).
  • Contact Sensors: Detect physical contact between specified links or objects. Useful for bumper sensors.

These simulated sensors provide data streams (e.g., sensor_msgs/msg/Image, sensor_msgs/msg/LaserScan, sensor_msgs/msg/Imu) identical in format to real hardware, allowing perception and control algorithm testing without modification.
